Nailing It

Okay, this one is for you dahlin' j-mee ... after much prodding over several sametime messages in the office and lunchtime sessions ... this is my go at blogging for 2008.

This is gonna be a lil disturbing for some ... so read on at your own risk ... But its been bothering me for awhile, so you might just wanna hear me out ... You see, I have this loose toenail on my big left toe ... and the problem is getting worse by the week. I think the culprits are tennis (too much impact) and golf (really uncomfortable shoes).

My poor feet are crushed and sore usually after a round of golf. And the impact from weekly tennis sessions has its fair share of painful contributions.

Based on some preliminary research online, seems like serious runners are plagued by the same problem as well. I was contemplating yanking out the loose nail which is now hanging precariously by a thin strip of flesh, but by doing so, it appears that this might lead to an ingrown nail later on. So this option is out. On the bright side, if the nail does drop off on its own, at least I can expect a new one!

Further into my surfs .... now this is where it gets fun ... I came across this blog ... someone made a necklace out of toenails! Yes, I kid you not. Not just his own toenail (well, mostly his), but donations from others as well!!! Eeee-yewwwww!!!! Click here for a better picture .... I dare you!


Now, can anyone tell me if a toenail fairy exists? I might just be tempted at yanking the nail out ;)

moments

It's just a about a week left to the new year.

And time to take stock of the more memorable happenings in 2007. A reflection of my year as follows ...

The Good :

1) The most significant would be having my own home! I don't know how I did it but I did it. It was something that was the cards two years down the road. But due to unforeseen circumstances (high rental rates) and the nagging feeling of living like a nomad, I took the plunge and began house-hunting only in mid-April. By then, property prices were already on the upswing and it was tough finding a place that was convenient and within budget. Anyhow, it was love at first sight and I'm loving the small lil' hole in the wall which I now call home. It was and still is great fun buying stuff to decorate the apartment, albeit the bigger hole in the pocket. It has also been great having friends over and chilling over my not-so-comfortable seating arrangements. But what the heck, its the company that counts! I have never found coming home to and having guests over such a pleasure.

2) Driving - Something which I have not done for seven years since I first got my license. Its been a mental to-do note for the past few years which I never got round to cos' there was no real need to. The only thing that fuelled to desire to drive again was actually linked to the getting the house and golf lessons. Rather than rely on the movers and on chauffers to ferry me around, a greater boost to mobility would be to start driving again! So on came refresher driving lessons (just three) and the onslaught of struggles with directions (Streetdirectory.com is a god-send!), reckless taxi drivers, fearless pedestrians, etc. I have not fully come out of the comfort zone as yet, preferring to drive only to the places that I am comfortable with (that excludes the far flung eastern and western parts of Singapore) and preferring to drive at night and during off-peak hours. Hopefully, it will get better with more practice. The increase in taxi-fares are a real pain!

3) More travelling to places that are immensely rich in culture with plenty of photo-whore opportunities with fantastic travel mates no less - Cambodia in May and Greece in September ... and of course the annual shopping/feasting pilgrimage to Hong Kong which always leaves me floored for more ...

4) Golf -A new sport which I took up in July, 10 intensive lessons to learn the swing, chipping and putting techniques which ended with a rewarding Proficiency Certificate (which on hindsight was not difficult to get at all!). That said, it is a very difficult sport to pick up with lotsa practice, patience and investment both in terms of time and money.

5) Jogging - Okay, lame as this might sound, since everyone is capable of jogging right? I finally FINALLY went for my first run this morning. Probably about 3km or more? Not too sure, but it lasted about 25 mins. This is one activity which I hope to do on a more regular basis to build up stamina for tennis and golf. So @lloy, who knows, I might just do a marathon with you next year, altho' not the 42km or 84km ones!

The Not-so-Good :

6) Year after year, I have been bemoaning about the loss of really great colleagues who have left the firm for greener pastures. Beth to Beijing, Angie to Melbourne, Jacq and Shimin to the financial big-wigs, Amos to Famous Amos (joke!) ... but Tee made a come-back, which was absolutely wonderful in reuniting the original Seven! No one knows how much longer we can remain as a Seven ... it is very scary to think of who might be the last one standing ... altho' if anyone makes it to partner, its a not-so-scary thought after all ...

7) Work has taken on a more stressful turn. Life in the advisory team is not all a bed of roses as most would imagine. While it doesn't come with a portfolio of clients, its a constant sea of change which requires adaptation on an almost daily basis. It's a steep learning curve and a brand new arena which I am keen to embrace. At the same time, it also comes with high expectations which are a current struggle. Being, the only STC in the team, I feel like I'm treading on thin ice over the next six months. I can only hope for the best.

8) I was just reading through my musings over 2006 in last year's blog, and it sounds like I have done a lot more this year. Which is absolutely fantastic! And just a year ago, I was contemplating Lasik for that elusive 6/6 vision. It is something which I have been mulling over for a long time, since wearing contacts or specs on board long haul flights are such a pain. Before you roll your eyes and start the vanity debacle, I think waking up in the mornings with perfect eyesight without fumbling for that pair of specs or prying those half-shut eyes open to insert those contacts, is such a pure feeling. Anyway, I did give a shot at my chances at Lasik earlier this month. But my medical history of having done retina detachment previously put me at greater risk as compared to most patients. Rather than run the risk of being in the range of that 2 - 3% of complications and the possibility of going under the knife for another round of surgery or lose my sight, with much prodding from Mum, I decided to give it a miss. Well, at least I tried.

I guess the above summarizes my feelings at this time of the year as I wrap things up. So, here's looking forward to 2008! May there be more positive things to come!

The Hunted

With regards to my existing lease, we have decided to renew for another 1 year, maybe 2 years depending on the landlord.

So that will give me some time to search for a proper home. Enough of nomadic experiences.

HOME.

Hmm, home has never really lived up to its meaning the past 5 years.

Time files - staying on my own for the past 5 years was not something I had planned or expected to do. But circumstances change.

It didn't occur to me until 2 days ago that I have stayed at the current flat for 3 years now, until T reminded me that this would be our 4th year. I had forgotten that we signed a renewed lease just last year.

Anyway, D has decided to move out, while leaves the master bedroom empty. We managed to find new flatmates to take over her room come July via an online posting. Met the couple over the weekend and they seem decent. Both are architects and they seem rather keen to jazz up the common areas. They reckon the place too plain! I know my place looks like its been robbed since it is devoid of any artefacts, paintings and whatever display pieces you can think of. Oh well, let's see what they can come up with. Something tasteful I hope.

The Hunt (updates)

The hunt is still on. Went to view several units over the weekend and I think I have fallen in love.

Love at first sight? Is it THE ONE?

Physical appearances wise - its gorgeous!
Inner beauty - well, so-so cos' of the afternoon sun and its facing the longkang.
Potential - hmm, I would suppose so cos' its sooooo close to the MRT!

Its a HOT unit I reckon. Rental yields are high. A probable investment choice for now and a permanent home thereafter is what I am hoping for.

The dilemma : To stop the speed-dating now or grab it while it lasts?

The Hunt Is On

For those in the know, of late, I have been fretting over the roof over my head.

Come June, my lease @ Bishan is due for renewal or kapoot - lapse.

It was a decision that 3 of us had to make.

A) To renew the lease, albeit at a higher and at an initial ridiculously proposed increase in rent of 66.66% (WTF?!)

or

B) To allow the lease to lapse and we all go our separate ways.

Initially, we all agreed to renew the lease depending on how negotiations with the landlord went. Subsequently, one opted out of the renewal. Which leaves us with another problem : finding another flatmate to split the rent.

The past 2 weeks and counting were an ordeal for me. With the IT filing deadlines, FashBash and the lingering burden of the lease thingy...boy, it was sleepless nights...

Another alternative to continue leasing was to move back home to mummy and daddy...

Ya right!!! Not if I can help it.

The other obvious consideration was buying a place to stay. This was something I had planned in 2 years time (with luck). But circumstances proved otherwise. Unfortunately, now seems like a bad time to buy property. That said, in 2 years time, what could be within reach now could be out of reach then and the vicious circle begins again. Hunt for a new place to stay etc.

Speaking of which, its one thing which I absolutely hate, having to scour, pack and uproot. Scouring for a place to stay is a nightmare...it is tedious, time-consuming and requires a lot of research. Packing, needless to say is a disgusting chore. And finally the uproot. Getting used to unfamiliar surroundings, moving out of the comfort zone and hopefully assimilating seamlessly into the new one. Hence, lending argument that perhaps, getting a place of my own now (if I chance upon the right one) might be lead to the pursuit of happyness :)

Oh yes, with such gaiety and optimism that presents!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the right abode comes along. After all, it will be I think the largest financial commitment that I will make. So it has to be perfect, it has to be ME.

It didn't dawn on me on how much older I am than my younger cousins until I received a Friendster request from my dear cousin Syb. At first I didn't know who she was ... *scratch head* some 17-year old wanting to be my friend??? Then realization settled in ... and enlightenment ! But gosh ... 17!!!!! Okay, I'm forgetting that brudder Leon is only 16 who will enter NS when I am 30 ... argh!!!!!!!!!! DEPRESSION!!!!!!!

I still remember the time I went to visit Syb when she was just a month old perhaps ... and now she is all grown up and in a 'domestic partnership' ... whatever that means for a 17-year old ... I really don't want to know ...

I guess I am still in this self-delusionary stage where my younger cousins never seem to grow up ... I loved playing and running amok with them and not after them! hahaha

oh oh oh ... as I am typing this, dear sista didn't even know who Syb was ... apparently our younger cousin is on a Friendster rampage ... hahaha

Sigh, kids ... they never grow up do they? *grin*

But wait ... 'domestic partnership'? hmm ... I'm not even at that stage yet ...

yeah, so the song goes ... the earthquake earlier this week caused quite a ruckus ... was engaged in a phonecall when it happened ... felt a lil woozy but didn't think much about it cos' I was engrossed in conversation and thought that it was my colleague who was shaking my chair for no reason at all ... so anyway, I was hoping that the building would be evacuated to validate my extra long lunch that I had with the long lost SC-gals ...

other earth-shattering news this week ... we have a new (Master) Kutiya who rejoined the firm and now i have to work under her ... argh!!!!!

j-mee's ground-breaking news left me dumbfounded as well ... hey dude, we are all here for you man ... whenever, whatever ...

and and and

H&M has just opened in Hong Kong!!!!

oh my gawd!!!! I sooo wanted to buy a plane ticket and fly over immediately when Jas broke the news to me ...

Nomad

my current lease is expiring come June/July this year ... and i'm starting to fret over it ... I like my current place a lot and am not keen on moving onto a new place to stay cos' I just have too much stuff to move! defaulted on my spring cleaning this year so its still a lot of clutter in the store room and some 'litter' here and there ... yeah, it sounds like I live in a sty ... but really, its not as bad as I make it out to be ...

besides, location is great ... centralized and close to mummy dearest ... erm, close to the (free) tennis courts too ... haha! love the high floor as well ...

seems like more people are moving out these days ... Odie is moving into her apartment this month ... Stace is gonna move into her uber-quaint Monk's Hill Terrace apartment come May ... oh man, those black and white walk-ups with a nice verandah ... *drool* ... would have loved to move in together with Stace but its too early to move!!! argh!!!

am keeping my fingers crossed that I can stay put for another year at least ... wish me luck!

IT's HERE!!!

uh huh .... peak season is here ...

been slogging in the office till late, which kinda explains the silence ... well, i was getting lazy too ... so before j-mee starts chasing me for posts, thought i'd better drop a line in here ... heh

hmm, so what have i been up to?

well, i think i have hung up my dancing shoes and given up on clubbing ... somehow, i'm getting bored with the scene, preferring to wine and dine instead ... there are so many restaurants that i wanna try ... Hangout at Mt Emily, Il Lido, Sage, Novus, Tatsuya, chocolate buffet at Fullerton and many more ... so if u are game for some serious epicurean indulgence, lemme know and i will be happy to oblige :)

i have also been working on more designs for the chinoserie collection for SY's shop ... for the first time in ages, i felt the exhiliration working intently on designing and making stuff ... just locking myself at home and working until the wee hours in the morning churning new pieces presented the most immense satisfaction that i can never get out of work ...

having said that, i'm thankful for my creative outlet in balancing the current staid work environment ...

at the same time, i hope that this new business venture will take off ... could do with the extra moolah so that i can buy more cheongsams from SY! hehe :)

2 more days ...

before we usher in the New Year ... as expected, Christmas has come and gone like a flicker of a flame ...

I tend to slip into a lil' depression as we approach the end of the year ... the feeling of apprehension about the New Year kicks in ... seems like another tunnel to chug along ... not exactly looking forward to growing a year older as well ... version 2.8 is about to be installed soon ... while version 2.7 is still grappling with the environment at large ...

Anyway, I'm glad I took time off from work to relax and take things easy before work snowballs into the peak season which is like SOON ... its also a time to reflect on events that happened throughout the year ...

There were some painful and heart-breaking times and several bumps along the way in terms of work and relationships. However, overall I must say that 2006 has been a great year ...

>> I did my usual bit of travelling, with an entire month off from work ... another extensive round this year ... Batam with the ees, Bangkok with Mum + Sis, Tioman with the gang, the annual HK/SZ pilgrimage, first trip Down Under to Syd/Melb

Out-Of-Sorts

sigh ... its terrible feeling unwell at this time of the year when I really want to revel in all the festivities and post-Christmas sales ...

was down with flu the week before ... and then came the cough that never went away ... and now my eyes are giving me problems ... thought it was the contact lenses that was causing the eye irritation ... so off came the lenses and on came the spectacles with prescribed eye drops ... to no avail ... and to make things worse my spectacles are giving me a headache!!! argh!!! apparently the other optician I visited earlier this year swapped the lenses for each side incorrectly ... such idiots!

anyway, I think I know where the problem lies ... overdose of You-Tubing the past week ... I admit that its more straining on the eyes than working in the office ...

visit to the optician revealed that my myopia has improved slightly ... surprise surprise ...

also, I'm considering Lasik now that prices have dropped tremendously ... 2 friends have gone under the knife this year and I'm tempted as well ... New Year's resolution perhaps ...

Gurl Power

If you have not caught Girls Out Loud (GOL), airing on Channel 5 on Monday Nights, you have to watch this clip ... absolutely hilarious!!! I was roaring with laughter ... hahaha

Yes, yes ... i have been on a You-Tube rampage ... just completed the entire series of Goong aka Princess Hours ... all 24 episodes in 7 days ... whew!

Anyway, before i digress ... the funny bits about the blind dates on GOL which i thought were absolutely corny are as follows :

1) Chelestier (a hybrid of Chelsea and Balestier ... and to think that Balestier is cool??? wtf?)

What sort of a name is that?! So hongkee like ... and to think that this guy actually conferred this name upon himself (what was he thinking?) ... he would have garnered the same reaction from me as Roz did ... tsk tsk

Plus he claims to be some love guru having penned a book about dating tips ... please lah, who is he trying to bluff?

2) Steven Lim (FREAK FREAK FREAK!!!)

OMG!!! Absolutely DISGUSTING and damn narcissistic !!! This guy is oblivious to how irritating he can be ... and he can't sing for goodness sake! People like him should be paired with Kutiya (since they live in a world of their own) ... can we set them up please? They would make a beautiful couple ... really ...

yea, like Xiaxue, i would have ordered a suicide as well!!! ugh!

ok i should probably stop bitching ... but since I am already guaranteed my first class ticket to HELL ... so might as well make the ride worth it eh?

My Potato-Head

i want to build my own hybrid of men ... you know .... like the Do-It-Yourself Mr Potato-Head?

in Disneyland, you get to choose the pieces that you like and assemble the perfect Mr Potato-Head together ... just the way you like it ... aahhh ... wouldn't that be great? just like cloning a mate ... hmmm ...

yes, yes, those of you in the know (ahem, circle of trust) would have heard me bemoaning the absence of nice men ... chivalry is so dead ... niceness is non-existent ... even having EQ seems so much to ask for ... ugh!

oh yes, i'm so hard to please ...

so a lil of A + B + C + D (i'm silently reciting some names from my lil black book) = the puuurrr-feeecccct man ...

and TA-DA!!! meet, my soul-mate ........... yyeessss, i'm settling for potato-heads now ... i need my dosage of kan-tang!


and you know what the best part is?

see the pot of gold (doh) that darling Mr Potato-Head is standing on? well, being the kind and generous soul that he is ... he gives me lotsa doh to play with ... hehehe

the prawn mee incident ...

unfortunate chain of events took place yesterday and today ... more drama to ensue tomorrow ... it all started when we found a roach in the noodles at this prawn mee stall at Pekin Street ... so please don't EVER go there!

basically things have blown out of proportion due to the nasty owner of the food establishment ...

damn pissed + irritated ... i'm that close to getting a voodoo doll ...

will rant later on when things are more settled ... i hope ...

i'm an online freak!!!

i'm such a internet addict ...

i Google practically everything ...
i read the papers online ...
i check the dictionary online ...
i shop online (eBay + other US sites) ...
i talk to my friends online (MSN/Google Talk) ...
i keep in touch with friends online via email (no more snail mails which i used to be a fan of) ...
i spew #@*&!* /rant/rave .... aka blog online ...
i check street directions online ...
i check the Yellow Pages online ...
i watch cable TV online ...

Yes ... i'm an online freak!!!

- the first appliance i turn on when i reach home is my laptop ...

- i feel disconnected when my broadband is down ...

- i feel uncomfortable if i don't check my (personal) email account(s) within 24 hours ...

- i feel shattered when my laptop crashes .. it's as if my whole world has come crashing down ...

- i prefer MSN-ing to SMS-ing ...

- my main source of entertainment are from internet sites (not porn, you dirtbag!) rather than the teevo ...

anyway, the point is ... it suddenly dawned upon me that since i read the papers online, i hardly have access to print advertisements nowadays ... i have no clue as to what the latest sales or promotions are ... new property launches ... the newest mobile phone in the market etc ...

all that i am privy to are pop-up ads ... which i immediately terminate and ignore ...

such is my internet life ...

which explains why i pay more attention to print ads when i lay my hands on newspapers :)
