I have been asked to contribute my take on "local/secret gems" on quirky finds in Singapore for a foreign magazine ... I chose Salad at Haji Lane since this where we are selling our wares as well ...
Before you get too excited ... its just a short + simple contribution ... nothing fancy ... if it gets approved by the editors ... my take will be out in the December'06 issue ... promise to update in due course ...
And since i promised Stacey that we will check out Haji Lane together ... here are some pictures of Salad ...

Since we were around the Arab Street vicinity, decided to have a go at Russian food @ Nadezhda Russian Restaurant
Since we didn't know what to order, we settled for the recommended items per the food review instead ...
Borsch Soup – i call it this a Russian Minestrone Soup (sans beans) ... looked a tad disappointing ... but it turned out to be very tasty ... although another review says otherwise ...
Minskaya Kotleta – roasted chicken leg stuffed with mushrooms + Russian salad on the side ... very tender meat ... this dish it has a certain smell to it though ... best to eat it with the mustard provided ...
Blinchiki Apple with Ice-Cream – pancake stuffed with fresh apple served with honey + whipped cream + ice-cream ... this was the best of the lot! very very yummy!!!
Pelmeni - akin to wontons ... there are 3 variations of pelmenis (pork/meat/mixed) to choose from ... we opted for mixed ... there are also 4 types of dressings ... i can't remember which one we chose though ... at first bite, it was quite tasteless ... however, the flavour tends to emerge with more mouthfuls ... texture of the pelmenis was average ...
aahhh ... drinks ... this is where our faces started cringing ... although we seriously wanted to order some vodka (shots) ... we thought that it would be more fun to try out some traditional Russian drinks instead ...
simply awful!!! bleah! drinks ordered were supposed to be Russian teas and somehow there was a tinge of alcohol in them ... not very palatable ... should have gone for the vodka instead!
:: Kvas; Tea Grip (L-R) ::

:: Borsh Soup; Minskaya Kotleta; Blinchiki Apple; Pelmeni (clockwise L- R) ::
Well ... it was quite an interesting experience at Nadezhda ... worth a try if you have not had a go at Russian food ... don't expect fantastic ambience + service ... just go for the food ...
Would like to try Shashlik Restaurant (run by cranky Hainanese men and apparently famous for their beef steaks) next ... any takers?
well ... look to the sheets to determine your designated spot :)
no cause for argument there ...
check out the range of bedding from no one you know ...
even comes in boy + boy and girl + girl ... cool ain't it? gay liberation everyone!
unfortunately there ain't any room for orgies ... three's a crowd, four's/five's/six's ... well ... an even larger crowd ... and you'd need a larger bed anyway ... if you use a bed that is :)
can't help thinking of jem on the past bit *grinz*

did loads today ... and ate loads as well ...
8am : headed to Keppel for some swings with Wilson ... turns out that the rest of the sleepy heads were still in lala land ... oh well ... was game for another shot at golf ... still suck at it ... so if anyone is keen on lessons ... i'm game ...
10.30 am : half an hour late for brunch session at PS cafe @ Dempsey Road ... fortunately, we managed to get a table for 11 ... but only 8 showed up ...
fyi ... PS Cafe stands for Project Shop Cafe ... NOT Plaza Singapura Cafe ...
place is as nice as can be ... atmosphere was purr-fect for a sunday brunch ... sunny skies ... lush greenery (we did alfresco) ... piped jazz in the background ... beautiful people with beautiful kids (spotted Shabnam Melwani + hubby) ... and of course ... great company ...
food was good too! the pictures show it all ... it looks as good as it tastes!!! enuf said ...

1 pm : headed towards far east plaza ... the boys ... Vin Wee + Wilson got a hair cut ... very stylo-mylo!!! second meal of the day - infamous chicken rice at far east
*** interesting discovery ***
Out of the 7 who had chicken rice ... 5 opted for breast meat ... Wei Hua was so dumbfounded (he must be thinking, my friends are such losers ... hahaha)
yea yea yea, people who prefer breast meat don't know what they are missing out on ... still its leaner, healthier and waaayy easier to eat ... according to me that is ...
***
hung around orchard ... did some shopping ... to kill time for our movie ...
5pm : caught the horror flick 'The Omen' at Lido ... totally corny ... don't watch it ... in the absence of good movies, i think chick flicks are still better ...
7pm : third meal of the day - porridge at Chinatown followed by dessert at Temple Street (same place as where i ate with fam-lee the day before) ...

trawled around Chinatown, got our bearings mixed up in attempting to locate much hyped Majestic Hotel ... finally found it and it was COOL! very snazzy decor sprawled with designer furniture ... love the raw ceilings ... and the Bourgie table lamps from Kartell ... i want!!! checked out the swimming pool ... which was really tiny ... but the pot holes are uber cool ... we got chased out in less than 5 minutes ...
